Instructions Prior to Allergy Testing


Five full days prior to your allergy testing, please do not use the following medications:

  • Antihistamines/Cold Allergy Pills:
    Benadryl, Allegra, or Allegra-D, Claritin, Clarinex, Zyrtec, Rynatan, Singulair, Polyhistine, Dimetapp, Dimetane, Tylenol Allergy Sinus, Comtrex, and medications with PM at the end such as (Excedrin PM, Tylenol PM), cough syrups.  Most cold/allergy medications bought over the counter contain antihistamines.

  • Tranquilizers/Nerve Pills:
    Ativan, Atarax, Valium, Xanex, Tranxene, sleeping pills

  • Arthritis/Anti-Inflammatory:
    Aleve, Celebrex, Motrin, Naprosyn, Ibuprofen, Advil.  Cortisones/steroids* (injection/oral).

  • Acid-Reflux Medications:
    Prevacid, Prilosec, Tagamet, Nexium, Zantac.

  • Miscellaneous Medications:
    Seizure medications, Ritalin, some types of migraine medications, Midol, beta-blockers (many blood pressure medications).  DO NOT STOP USING THESE MEDICATIONS WITHOUT FIRST CONSULTING YOUR DOCTOR!

  • If you are unsure about any medications, please call our allergy clinic and ask!

* If you have recently used any type of steroid, you must be off 21 days before skin testing can be done.

The following medications may be used:

Any nasal sprays, antibiotics, aspirin, Excedrin, Tylenol, birth control pills, blood pressure pills (except beta-blockers), Hormones, fluid retention (diuretics), plain decongestants (such as Sudafed), and pain meds.

The testing will take from 1-1/2 to 3 hours.  Please wear short sleeves.  You may eat before you come to the allergy clinic.  NO PERFUMES OR AFTERSHAVES!
